Interlaken is a base, not a destination. The reason to be here is what lies around it: Grindelwald with the Eiger north face and the Grindelwald Terminal, from which the Eiger Express reaches the Jungfraujoch railway in a fraction of the old time; Lauterbrunnen with the Staubbach and Trümmelbach falls; car-free Wengen and Mürren above it; the Schilthorn and its Piz Gloria; Harder Kulm directly above the town; Lake Thun with Spiez and Oberhofen castles; Lake Brienz with Iseltwald and the Giessbach falls. Distances are short — Grindelwald is 20 minutes, Lauterbrunnen 15, Stechelberg 25 — but the roads are single-carriageway, the car parks fill by ten in high season, and the last cable cars do not wait.

That is where a private chauffeur earns his place. Your First Limo chauffeur plans the day around the cable-car timetables, drops you at the valley station and is at the exit when you come down; he knows that the Grindelwald–Männlichen and Wengen–Männlichen lifts land in different valleys, and that on a clear day the Schilthorn is worth more than the Jungfraujoch if the queue at the Terminal is already an hour long. He speaks English and German, drives a washed black Mercedes, and treats a family from Riyadh, Mumbai or Seoul with the same discretion as a board member from Zurich. Most guests reach Interlaken through Zurich. The Zurich Airport to Interlaken transfer is 130 kilometres on the A1 and A6 via Bern or the A2 and A8 via Lucerne and the Brünig — usually 1 h 40, up to 2 h 15 on winter Saturdays. Fixed price from CHF 540 in the Mercedes E-Class, from Kloten to your hotel door in Interlaken, Wilderswil, Bönigen, Matten or Unterseen — and, on request, straight on to Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen without changing at Interlaken Ost. Your chauffeur tracks the flight, waits in Arrivals 1 or 2 with a name board, loads the luggage; the first 60 minutes of waiting after landing are included, so a slow bag carousel costs you nothing. From Geneva Airport allow 220 kilometres and 2 h 40, from Basel's EuroAirport 155 kilometres and 1 h 50, from Bern 60 kilometres and 50 minutes (from CHF 250), from Lucerne 75 kilometres and an hour over the Brünig (from CHF 310) — the more scenic approach, past Lake Lungern and down to Lake Brienz. For groups of up to seven with skis and luggage we recommend the V-Class; for larger groups, the Mercedes Sprinter. Return transfers are timed to your flight: we collect you at the hotel and drop you in front of check-in, no change at Interlaken Ost, no suitcases through the Zurich airport station.

Four of the Jungfrau region's best-known villages have no through road or no road at all. Grindelwald has one — the transfer from Interlaken is 20 kilometres and 25 minutes, from CHF 80, to your hotel or to the Grindelwald Terminal. Lauterbrunnen has one too — 12 kilometres, 20 minutes, from CHF 80 — and is where a chauffeur becomes essential: Wengen above it is car-free and reached only by the rack railway from Lauterbrunnen station, Mürren only by cable car from Stechelberg or via Lauterbrunnen and Grütschalp. Your chauffeur drops you and your luggage at the correct valley station, hands you over to the hotel's luggage service where one exists, and collects you at the same point on the day you leave.

Day tours work the same way: Interlaken to the Grindelwald Terminal for the Jungfraujoch at 08:00, down to Lauterbrunnen at 15:00, Trümmelbach falls, back to the Höheweg by six. Or Interlaken to Stechelberg for the Schilthorn, lunch in Mürren, return via the Lauterbrunnen valley. Or the lakes: Iseltwald and the Giessbach falls in the morning, Brienz and the Ballenberg open-air museum after lunch. We book these as hourly hire from CHF 200 per hour or as a fixed-price day, whichever is cheaper for you, and the chauffeur stays with the car throughout.

Interlaken's hotels and the Congress Centre Kursaal run a steady calendar of incentives, board retreats and conferences, and the same question comes up every time: how do forty people get from Zurich Airport to the Victoria-Jungfrau, up to the Jungfraujoch and back, and out again on Sunday without a coach that cannot enter half the villages? Interlaken: the Höheweg between Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost holds the grand hotels; the Höhematte is closed for events; Unterseen across the Aare is the old town; Matten to the south has the Tell theatre and the youth hostels; Wilderswil is the Schynige Platte railway; Bönigen and Iseltwald are the Lake Brienz shore; Ringgenberg and Goldswil the north shore. Grindelwald: the village street is one-way in summer; the Terminal at Grund is the departure for the Eiger Express and the Männlichen gondola; First is the gondola on the village side. Lauterbrunnen: the car park at the station fills by nine in season, the Staubbach fall is a five-minute walk, Stechelberg is the end of the valley and the Schilthorn cable car.

Wengen and Mürren: car-free — luggage goes by hotel electric cart from the station; we hand over at Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg. Beatenberg and the Niederhorn above Lake Thun; Merligen with the Beatus; Spiez with the castle and the Lake Thun boats; Thun with the old town and the castle; Brienz with the Rothorn railway and the Ballenberg. Kandersteg and the Oeschinensee are 45 minutes, Gstaad and Saanen an hour, Adelboden 50 minutes. The whole Bernese Oberland is served at fixed prices, with no approach fee for pick-ups anywhere between Thun and Brienz.

In Interlaken the V-Class is the default, not the upgrade. It seats up to seven, takes skis, snowboards and suitcases in the boot, and is the vehicle most families, ski groups and tour parties book for the airport transfer and the day tours alike. The Mercedes E-Class is the right car for two travellers with luggage; the S-Class for guests who want to sleep or work through the 1 h 40 from Zurich; the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class for honeymoon arrivals and private clients who want the car to match the hotel. All vehicles run winter tyres from November to April and carry water, chargers and Wi-Fi; child seats are fitted on request at no charge.

One practical note: in winter the valley roads to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen are cleared but can be icy at dawn; our chauffeurs plan early departures for first-lift skiers accordingly, and on days when the road up to Grindelwald is closed for snow we hold the car in Interlaken rather than leave you at a closed barrier. This is also where a fixed price beats a meter. A taxi from Interlaken to the Grindelwald Terminal is charged by the meter and is rarely available at seven in the morning in February; our transfer is a fixed CHF 80 in the E-Class, from CHF 80 in the V-Class for a family of five with skis, booked the evening before, chauffeur at the door at the agreed minute. For recurring shuttles — a weekly staff transfer for a hotel, a season-long school run to Gstaad or Bern — we quote a monthly flat rate.

Hourly hire is from CHF 200 per hour with a two-hour minimum and 20 kilometres per hour included, billed in half-hour steps after that — the usual format for a Jungfrau day tour. The V-Class, S-Class and Maybach carry a class surcharge that we state with the quote.
